From a simple farming background, he became the national poet of Scotland and incorporated Scottish history, folklore, and Scots dialect into his work. From a simple farming background, he became the national poet of Scotland and his poetry was soon accepted as remarkable, contributing to his becoming known as the 'Ploughman Poet'. Burns saw to preserve Scottish heritage and the Scots dialect, by incorporating Scottish history and folklore into his poetry.
