A scholarly treatise on demographic changes in the inner city area. Gentrification is defined as 'the movement of high status social groups into an area traditionally associated with low income residents.' The term 'gentrification', borrowed from overseas, relates in Australia to the private renovation of old houses in the inner suburbs and is associated with the displacement of lower income groups and migrants and the emergence of resident action groups. Concludes that 'trendification' might be a better term for describing visual changes in inner Melbourne.
