Notes:
Published to mark the centenary of the Melbourne Branch of the Printing and Kindred Industries Union of Australia. The leaders of this union figured prominently in the establishment of the Labour Party and fostered a trend towards state socialism. Founded in 1867, the Melbourne Typographical Society comprised mostly compositors and pressmen in Melbourne's daily newspaper offices and large printing houses as well as some less well-paid tradesmen in the smaller printeries who were subject to seasonal unemployment and sweating. By 1921 it had became part of the federal union, the Printing Industry Employees' Union of Australia, which eventually acquired the above name.
