Various information related to the first Victorian State election in 1856. Men entitled to vote for the Legislative Assembly and Council are listed both alphabetically by electoral division, and alphabetically in a union list. This latter list was compiled on index cards by workers at the State Library in the 1960s, and users are cautioned against an acceptable but significant error rate. Each card typically identifies the elector's salary, occupation and address. The requirements for electoral enfranchisement are explained in "The black and white list: Victorian electors' guide" (1856), which is also reproduced here.
