Subject: An index arranged by surname to children cared for by the state. This included orphans, destitute children and offending juveniles. In 1864, an Act of Parliament led to the establishment of industrial schools and reformatories and by the end of 1865, the government was caring for 1095 children. The full registers are held at the Public Record Office (VPRS 4527 vols.1-42, and VPRS 0055 vol.1)
