Jean Paul Belmondo plays Michel Poiccard, a hoodlum who after stealing a car to drive to Paris, discovers a gun in the glove department and shoots a policeman whom he encounters on the way. While in Paris, searching for a criminal who owes him money, he meets up with an American ex-girlfriend Patricia Franchini, whom he tries to persuade to go to Italy with him. While staying in her apartment, Poiccard is recognised and the police strike a deal with Patricia that leads to his downfall.
