When her village in the Congo is destroyed at the start of World War I, a spinsterish missionary is rescued by a gin-loving river trader. Their perilous escape on the war-torn African Queen turns into an outright battle against nature, the Germans and each other as the tempestuous pair realise they have fallen in love.
