The Register is a list of places which have "aesthetic, historic, scientific or social significance, or other special value." Each building is described in about fifty words. The listing of a building in the Register does not in itself impose any legal sanctions or obligations on the owners. An introductory essay by Jim Davidson presents an outline of general influences upon the architectural history of Melbourne. pp.22-28: brief descriptions of the Brunswick/Gertrude Streets and Gore/George/Napier Streets Conservation Areas and individual classified buildings in Fitzroy.
