"... In a country like Australia, where it is quite probably that a man who has been a miner and brought up in a grade of society whose customs are, to say the least of it, rather primitive, may in course of time represent his State in a governing body, and become the equal of those born in the refined atmosphere of Toorak, it is as well to have a guide which will enable him to go into that society without any fear of doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. Then, too, his wife may have been drawn from the same class to which he himself belonged, and the usages of the new society will have many terrors for her unless she can be sure that at any rate she will not leave undone any of those things which she ought to do."--Introduction, page 5.
