Notes:
Melbourne at the turn of the century was two cities in one, the solid and the squalid. Major streets of prosperous banks and business houses were criss-crossed by tiny alleyways of slum dwellings" (From the Introduction). Two of the finest churches in the city were St. John's in Latrobe St and St. James' Cathedral on the corner of Batman and King Streets. These were to become the home of the Mission of St. James and St. John. The mission was set up to provide homes for the homeless, food and hospitals.Bibliography: p. 59.
