Facsimile reproductions of twenty-six maps of early Melbourne held in the Map Room of the Baillieu Library at Melbourne University. Also reproduced are about two dozen pictures, largely taken from nineteenth century illustrated newspapers. The book is basically intended for senior secondary students. Each map is accompanied by a brief annotation and a set of questions designed to assist students in interpreting and contextualising the maps. Included are an 1839 view of Melbourne from the Yarra (J. Adamson), an 1839 plan of city allotments, an 1850 parish plan, a section of the famous 1855 map by Kearney, an 1865 map of gun emplacements in Hobson's Bay, a section of the 1885 Sand's & McDougall street map, and a plan of and early electric power station in Richmond.
