Canvas documentaries : panoramic entertainments in nineteenth-century Australia and New Zealand
Colligan, Mimi2002
Book
Captures the artistic, civic and social preoccupations of the Victorian era.Scholarly and well-documented, this book is a fascinating history of a form of entertainment which preceded cinema. Panoramas, dioramas and cycloramas were all forms of large-scale painted pictures showing contemparary and historical scenes in an entertaining way. Of particular interest to Richmond researchers is the chapter on the Cremorne Gardens panoramas: "Vesuvius in Melbourne: outdoor modelled panoramas and fireworks." This is a detailed account of the Cremorne pleasure-gardens, which operated by the Yarra in Richmond from 1855 to 1863. Each season a new panorama was set up, making use of the Cremorne lake, fireworks and three-dimensional scenery for a spectacular show. An excellent source of information and pictures about Cremorne.
