Summary

David Dunnigan comes home from Greenland to discover a young woman who may be his niece, Beth, being cared for by his friend and mentor, Father Bill Creedon. Is this damaged shell of a person the girl he has spent the last eighteen years searching for? And, if she is, can they rebuild their lives? Meanwhile, five university lecturers from all over Ireland have, seemingly at random, come across a strange, frightening book that tells of a shadowy figure called Mother Joan - a character many believe is simply an online ghost story. The academics, however, insist the creature is real, and is stalking them. The strange mystery leads Dunnigan to the crowded streets of London, and from there to the sprawling forest of Kielder in Northumberland, where urban myth and reality become terrifyingly linked, and where Dunnigan must fight an evil far more terrifying than any he has faced before.
