Nothing over half a crown : a personal history of the founder of the G.J. Coles stores
McLaughlin, Judith1990
Book
George Coles (1885-1977) and his brothers founded an Australian retailing empire based initially upon selling cheap household essentials in busy working class areas. Their first department store was opened in Smith Street, Collingwood, on 9 April 1914 - billed as a "3d, 6d and 1/- variety store". Five years later they opened a larger store next to the Collingwood post office - this time advertising "nothing over 2/6". This `Collingwood connection' is mentioned only in passing - this is a `respectful' biography penned by his daughter, concerned with presenting a shrewd, morally-upright, business and family man, "... a visionary who accepted the challenges of the future without forsaking the values of the past". The appendices provide details of the company, its directors and subsiduaries.
