Etienne, a railway engineer from Lille, is fired for having slapped his boss. After wandering for eight days in the North, he was hired in the mines of Montsou. There he meets the Maheu, a family of miners and falls in love with Catherine, their daughter who shares his feelings. But a brutal worker forces Catherine to become his mistress.
