For those who like to read in French, this book is short enough and interesting enough not to be discouraging. However, it is important to keep in mind that the mores in France (and probably most other countries) in 1900 when Carotte was written would generally be unacceptable in the 21st century. Among Poil de Carotte's many adventures are the killing of small animals for the fun of it as well as because he is asked to do so as a child brought up on a farm.
